When do you know if a child is left-handed?

17/09/2014

Lefty is a person who has the natural tendency to use the left side of his body, that is, using default arm and left leg as right-handers do with leg and right arm. When children are very young tend to be ambidextrous, using both hands and both legs equally, but at a time use preference that determines whether it will be a child given handedness appears.

But when do you know if a child is left-handed ?, is usually necessary to wait at least meets the two year old start using the left hand betraying its status lefty is something that is consolidated at four years of age , yet in many cases these ages left-handed children perform various activities with the right hand which causes have not clear whether it is left or right handed.

To determine whether a child will be left or right handed you can see which hand gets toys and objects, however, and as already indicated, the ambidextrous nature can confuse us and take even toys with left or right hand not know if left handed or not until you have four years of age. There are tests and tests to determine if a child is right or left handed, are tests that show us the preferred laterality (right or left), but we insist that is not fully defined until no reach four years of age, so tests done before can give erroneous results.

One of the tests that are usually performed to determine the laterality is the Test of Harris, it is a series of actions and should be selected if the child used the left or right hand, foot, eye and I heard. In the case of the hand must answer ten questions, throwing a ball, sharpen a pencil, hammer a nail, turn the doorknob, brushing teeth, using scissors, nose blowing, comb, cut with a knife and write.

To determine the dominance of the foot correspond to ten other questions: kicking a ball, leg anticipates the balance forward, one leg jump to about 10 meters, write a letter with your foot, a step up, drive a ball for 10 meters, raise one leg on a chair or a table, turn on one foot, balancing on one foot, and pull a ball under a chair or table.

To determine eye dominance tests like looking through a telescope or microscope are done, use a camera, etc. In tests of hearing, the child listen on the wall, on the floor or take the phone calls.

After testing can make an assessment, their scores with a 'D' if the 10 tests carried out by hand and the right foot with an 'I' if it is with hand and left foot. If done between 7 and 9 tests with hand and right foot is scored with a 'd', with the left foot and is scored with an 'i'. In the evaluation of eyes and ears, it is scored with a 'D' if you used eye and right ear, with a 'd' if you have only done two of the three tests with the right hand, 'I' defines which have performed the three tests with eye and left ear, 'i' when there have only been two of the three tests.

At the end, notes the results: a complete dexterous have obtained 'DDDD', a complete lefty 'IIII' a crusade laterality reflect with 'DIDI' a bad laterality affirmed with 'dddd'.

When we as parents realize that children are lefties we will need to be informed about the needs and daily problems they face, remember that they live in a right-handed world.

There are more tests to determine laterality, Test or Test Bergea Zazzo, but basically tests to be performed are similar to the Harris Test. Soon we will discuss the assumptions of the causes of a child to be left-handed, by genetics, by an elevated level of testosterone, a disability, because the brain has been affected by ultrasound scanners, stress at birth, etc.
