Although nothing is further from reality, the truth is that, since antiquity, lefties have been given negative connotations. At present, however, there is a belief that left-handed people are much more creative, since they are interpreted to use more of the right hemisphere of the brain, where artistic abilities are located. But the truth is that recent studies point to another very different reason, which could change our perception.
Scientists say babies already show a preference for thumb sucking when they are in the womb
The investigations that have been carried out so far show that each hemisphere controls its opposite side of the body and, for this reason, the left-handers are thought to use the right hemisphere more. However, a study by Dr. Sebastian Ocklenburg points out that the cause why some people are left-handed is more related to the spinal cord than to the brain.
Her team found that as of the 13th week of pregnancy, spinal cord activity already shows asymmetry. It seems that the activity of the marrow concentrates on the parts related to the electrical transmission towards the limbs and an asymmetry in the concentration of transmission would determine if the person will be left-handed or left-handed. In fact, scientists say that babies already show a preference for sucking either thumb when they are in the womb.
However, the study indicates that external factors, unrelated to genes, are also determinants. These factors are called epigenetics and influence symmetry by changing the interactions of the enzymes around the fetus, determining the way in which the genetic material will develop.
