NEW LEFT HANDED

18/07/2018

Surely there are some left-handed people around you. It is estimated that around 15% of the population is handled with the left hand and leg. Apparently this is not determined by geographical, gender or race reasons. It was quite unknown knowing the reasons why we are right-handed or left-handed. For a time it was linked to the result of the activity that registered the right or left part of the brain during the development of the fetus.
However, a recent investigation eventually dismantled this theory. Specifically scientists from the German University Ruhr of Bochum explain in a publication of the magazine eLife, that this ability develops in the womb of the mother, but the person in charge is not the brain, but the spinal cord. Apparently, after eight weeks of gestation they already find important genetic differences between right-handed and left-handed.
The performance of certain genes of the spinal cord, which are responsible for managing the movement of arms and legs, is different for each of the groups.
Spinal cord control
Since the 80s there was evidence that "the preference to use one or the other hand develops in the uterus in the eighth week of pregnancy". It is from week thirteen that they choose if they decide to suck the right or left thumb. The movements of the extremities are controlled at all times by the spinal cord, which receives orders from the cerebral cortex to perform the movement.
The investigation made it possible to discover that these two parts of the body do not remain communicated from such early stages of gestation, so that the position of being right-handed or left-handed is determined only by the spinal cord.
The reasons why we use one part of the body or the other are not yet clear. Experts explain that this will depend on environmental factors caused during pregnancy.
