News, Science and Health
According to a study published by the scientific journal IFL Science, left-handed people have more skills than right-handers. The preferred use of one or the other hand has to do with brain functions and cognition. On average, left-handers have the most developed right hemisphere of the brain, which makes them better in spatial reasoning and in the mental representation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.
About 13.5% of people are not right-handed, some are able to use both hands equally, although the vast majority of them are left-handed. Geniuses of the arts such as Leonardo da Vinci or Mozart; and scientists like Marie Curie share this characteristic, as well as Barack Obama or Bill Gates. IFLScience also explains that another advantage of lefties is that they have the corpus callosum of the brain (a set of nerve cells that connect the two hemispheres of the brain) larger than right-handed. This means that the level of connection between both hemispheres is greater and can process information faster than those who write with the right hand. The causes of this greater connection, however, are not very clear. There are theories that claim that living in a world designed for right-handers has forced left-handed people to use both hands to develop this connection. This could mean that all people are able to reach the same levels of information processing if they are forced to use both hands equally.
Left-handers also excel in mathematics
All these characteristics may be the reason why lefties have an advantage in several professions. For example, there are many who are musicians, creative artists, architects or chess players. The aforementioned spatial reasoning and information processing are basic in these trades. In addition, the study did experiments to find out if the lefties also excel in mathematics. The results confirmed that these are better in solving mathematical problems of high difficulty, although in the simple tasks there were no notable differences between them. Skillful participants who were unable to use their left hand for tasks such as writing produced the worst results in both tests.
In conclusion it was concluded that left-handed people have a clear advantage in mathematics over people who always use the right hand without being able to use both in tasks. However, IFLScience warns that it is advisable not to prejudge the level of intelligence in left-handed and right-handed people, since, obviously, there are also skilled people with the same abilities.
