PEDAGOGICAL NOTES 4

28/11/2018

OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES
As we have said before, the scriptural difficulties in left-handed children appear after a few months or even some years. They are children who attend the Reeducation of writing during the child calligraphic stage, that is, between 10-12 years.
At this time, the child should be consolidating their writing skills worked in the previous stage -recaligraphic-, which normally lasts two to four years, but its duration varies greatly depending on the children, the school context in which they develop and according to the possibilities motor or intellectual of the child.
Generally, these children who come to the consultation are students who fail to overcome this stage and develop a dysgraphia: we say that a child is dysgraphic when, the quality of their writing is deficient, there being no neurological or intellectual deficit to explain this deficiency . As a result of poor structuring, the writing of this child does not reach the levels of maturity and balance necessary, making us show a clumsy, insecure and childlike writing.
Since writing is only possible from a certain level of motor organization, from a fine coordination of movements and from their possible activity in all directions of space, we will say that writing, conventional activity and codified, it is the fruit of an acquisition and this is possible only from a certain degree of intellectual, motor and affective development.
We will be, then, in front of a child who will present to us in his writing all the components of a dysgraphia developed by the bad habits acquired in the first stage and lacking adequate techniques that allow him to evolve in the scriptural plane with all normality.
The left-handed child rejects the written tasks, showing us a slow, awkward and retouched writing, returning to what he has just written and, sometimes, reviewing whole letters, appearing atrophies in most of the letters and irregularity. All these manifestations are accompanied by an intense pain of shoulder, arm and hand due to the incorrect position of your body at the time of writing.
The problems posed by left-handed or poorly lateralized children are quite frequent in the reeducation of writing and require practical solutions that can be channeled through an exhaustive study of each specific case. The first step will be to consolidate the lateralization so that dominance is homogeneous, training the dominant hand according to the skills acquired, looking for strategies to gain ease and speed, working techniques aimed at a correct placement of both the hand and the paper.
