The distinction between left and right was applied for the first time to politics in revolutionary France.
The distinction between left and right was applied for the first time to politics in revolutionary France.
In the Constituent Assembly, the deputies were divided into two opposing groups:
The Girondins wanted to restore law and order monarchy, while Mountain advocated a revolutionary state.
The Gironde, stood to the right of the President.
The Mountain, stood on the left.
In the center sat an undifferentiated mass designated as the Llano-or marsh.
So there was an identification of the left with the revolutionary radicalization, shouting "Freedom, Equality and Fraternity", triggering a stage utopias and ferocity that would only stop Bonaparte's coup. Robespierre, Danton and Marat were the definers of the first French political party that stood to the left.
