5 CURIOSITY

14/02/2018

It is estimated that between 10 and 13 percent of the world's population is left-handed. In simple terms, lefties are those people who by natural tendency preferentially use the left side of their body, hand and / or foot. Due to this differentiating characteristic, throughout history, they have lived subject to innumerable myths and superstitions.

Historical records point out that in earlier times, such as the Stone Age, the tools were evenly distributed for left and right handed, yet as they became sophisticated, a clear preference for the use of the right hand arose, which may be due, according to the Miscellany site Globedia, to the worship of the sun.

Thus, they were being relegated and strongly discriminated against, being victims of many types of abuse. Especially following the Inquisition, during the Middle Ages, where they were the perfect target so that their attributes and "singularities", were visualized as satanic. As a result, hundreds of innocents were cruelly killed at the stake.

Even in more civilized times, although they were not persecuted, they had to get used to living in a world designed for right-handers. Facing great difficulties in schools, where they were ignorantly tied to the left hand to force them to use the right or beat them, and in the world of work, where they were marginalized in a wide range of jobs, not being "trained."

Fortunately, today the scenario is different, and contrary to focusing on the possible "disadvantages" of being lefties, some advantages of being left have come to light. Today, in BioBioChile, we tell you.
1- Greater development of certain skills

Left-handed people have a natural tendency to be superior to right-handed people in the following skills: creativity - imagination - holistic thinking - intuition - arts (motor skills) - rhythm (beatings) - nonverbal expression - expression of feelings - visualization, portal specialized Medical daily.

According to Dr. Alan Searleman of the University of St. Lawrence in New York, "left-handed people have superior intelligence and better vocabulary than most people. This is, perhaps, why there are more of them in creative professions such as music, art and writing "
2- Greater multitasking ability

Lefties have always had to think faster because they continually face right challenges. Communication between their two cerebral hemispheres is much faster and more efficient.

The latter facilitates your ability to perform several tasks at once, being able to process multiple flows of information without problem, says Lifehack.
3- Easy to learn to drive

Statistics have shown that 57% of left-handers pass their driving exams on the first try, in contrast to 47% of right-handers.
4- They are better in interaction sports

The greater skill of the lefties manifests in combat and sports face to face. It is not uncommon for the proportion of left-handers in boxing, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball ... to be much larger than expected (one in five), while in other sports, it is the same as in the general population.

That is because, in a world of rights, attacks by the left are surprising. This is what the newspaper La Nación says.

Leonel Messi, Rafael Nadal, Diego Armando Maradona, and Oscar de la Hoya, are excellent examples of this.
5- They spend less time "queuing"

If, strangely enough, studies have shown that when it comes to queuing, people tend to drift toward their dominant side.

Thus, the right-handers go to the right and the left-handers to the left. As a result, according to the English newspaper The Telegraph, the ranks to the left are shorter. Which means that left-handed people spend less time waiting in line.
